Welcome to BlogPane
1. What Is BlogPane ?
To put it simply, it’s a feature to get your blog listed across all blogs of the alumni of your college. So, if you are an alumnus of IIT Delhi, once you submit your blog to BlogPane, it’ll be listed across all the blogs of IIT Delhi alumnus who are using BlogPane.
2. Could you explain a bit more?
BlogPane is a javascript application which fetches the blog URLs of alumni from your college(s) from our database ( Yeah, we have a good collection of blogs) and displays in a tree format on your blog page. To see a snapshot of blogs hosting BlogPane, See these blogs of Ajith , Jerome or look @ the sidebar of this page
3. Oh.. Seems to be good. How do I benefit?
Many ways.
A) Your blog will be listed across all blogs of your college alumni ( not just your batch-mates). So say, u r a 2004 passout, your blog could be possibly listed across some one’s blog who passed out in 1983 too. More incoming links means more traffic to your blog.
B) Say, your blog has the BlogPane .Our centralized data base is continually updated with new blog URLs that we discover. So, without you doing anything, the newly discovered blog-URL of your long lost friend from your college could be possibly seen in your blog-page..Isn’t that wonderful ???
C) This provides a unique way of networking . Isn’t it wonderful to have a
continually growing community of blogs of your college alumni in your blog
page?
D) As it displays only the blog URLs with recent activity/updation, it partly supplements the Feed Reader functionality of tracking recently updated blogs.
4. Great !!!..The feature seems to be cool .Will it affect the loading of my blog?
No.The load of the javascript that we are using is more or less equal to the
google analytics script that many of you use. This javascript will only display the recently updated blogs among your college alumni.( say last 30 or 15 days ).
1. By restricting the number of blogs listed, the data output of the script is kept small so that load performance of your blog is not affected.
2. Although the number of blogs in the world is growing on at a fast pace, the total number of active blogs is more or less constant ( A technorati study ). Hence even if your college’s 1985 passout alumni has a blog, it doesn’t make any sense to display it unless it is active.
This has another implication too. If you don’t keep your blog updated
frequently ( say atleast once in 15 – 30 days ), it won’t be displayed in any of
your college alumni’s blog. Hence, to get your blog listed on all your
college alumni’s blogs , it is important that you keep it updated atleast
once in 15 – 30 days too.
5. Oh Cool!!! – Do we have to pay or do any service ?
No. Absolutely Not !!!
6. What you get out of this ???
Ad-revenues… But more than that ,we are doing it for an entrepreneurship exposure, understanding the dynamics of setting up an internet venture, playing with the web 2.0 etc… And a bit of fame too
7. Ok!!..Let me try it out..How do I do it ?
As Rajnikanth says in Sivaji, “Coooool…”… Welcome to our ever-growing community… Installation is through cut-paste , the most common task that software engineers do…
1. If you have installed google-adsense, the installation of blog-pane is almost identical… Identify the place in your sidebar where the BlogPane widget should show up.
2. Go to our BlogPane search page ( Link ) , Search for your college community, Select the check box for your college, Click on generate javascript , Copy the javascript . Right now, we have college directories of IITs, IIMs, and NIT Calicut . We’ll be adding more to that list. So , if you are a member of one or more colleges, select the relevant check boxes, and generate Javascript.
3. If you are using blogger, Add a blog-widget (HTML/Javascript ) on the appropriate place that you selected, paste the javascript code on that popped-up window , Save it.. That’s it !!!
4. If you are using another blogging platform , it’ll be mostly be providing a facility to add javascript. If you are unable to do it, drop us a mail. We will try to help you out.
5. However, if your blogging platform doesn’t provide a facility to add
Javascript, we are helpless .
For a quick demo on adding BlogPane to your blog see this video
8. Hey, I’m an alumnus/student of So-and-so college, how do I get my blog listed in
blog-pane ?
If you are a current student, mail to from your institute mail ID , with details like blog URL,expected year of passing out, course being pursued etc.
If you are an alumni, mail to register@blogpane.com with a link to your Linked-In/Orkut profile link with the blog URL,course which you studied, year in which you passed out . Also , if you have a friend who has already listed his blog-URL with us, give his contact details too.
· We don’t promise instant response, as we are working professionals in software industry.. However, we’ll get back to you in 5 days for sure.
9. Oh !!! Why data entry is not automated?
One of our core strength is the integrity of data that is there in the blog-pane database. All the blogs shown under IIM Ahmedabad will be of IIM Ahmedabad students only.
To judge whether a blog URL corresponds to the person and he’s actually an alumnus of IIM / IIT / BITS / NIT , we need a bit of background check that we do through our contacts in those colleges. This process cannot be automated… It’s a place where human prowess is better than computational power.
10. What data we need to give you ?
1. Blog URL
2. College and the year in which you passed out /passing out plus the course.
3. Your Name
4. Orkut / Linked In profile link
5. Any of the BlogPane users who is your friend
6. Most importantly, send us a mail from your Institute mail ID , if it is active.
11. Oh!! My college is not in the list…What should I do ?
If you can pick up atleast 10 blog URLs among your college mates along with their name, send it to us. We’ll make a BlogPane of your college and send the details to you … So , no worries
12. Anymore questions, send a mail to
